Workshop

Workshop “Digital Twins For Aerospace”, Rome December 14, 2022

The University of Rome “Tor Vergata” will guest the workshop titled “Digital Twins For Aerospace“. The event is organized by Marco Evangelos Biancolini and Ubaldo Cella, respectively professor of Machine Design and researcher at the Enterprise Engineering department “Mario Lucertini”. Professors and engineers, active in EU research programs, from academic, industry and research institutions, will provide an overview the state of research on numerical tools and methodologies.

Digital Twins are virtual representations of physical objects used to predict how the final product will operatively perform in its lifecycle. The improvement of such numerical models is, in the aerospace field, decisive to design more and more efficient and greener aircrafts and rockets. The workshop focuses on the state of the art of digital twins to face aerospace design problems but also highlighting how other field of engineering benefits from the availability of methodologies able to efficiently model the physics involved in mechanical systems.

The workshop is addressed to students and engineers who want to be updated on aerospace technologies. The participation is free. People interested can attend the workshop at this link. For information contact Dr. Ubaldo Cella.

Flexible Engineering Toward Green Aircraft: CAE Tools for Sustainable…

At the end of 2017, the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” hosted the Flexible Engineering Toward Green Aircraft workshop. The objectives were to present the state of the art of research in the aerospace sector and to show the goals achieved by design and numerical analysis tools in support of aeronautical design. Professors and engineers from the world of research and industry gave an overview on themes as Aeroleasticity, Robust Design and Numerical Optimization. The seminar came at the conclusion of two European research projects in which the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” was involved: RBF4AERO and RIBES. In RBF4AERO, a multidisciplinary optimization platform based on mesh morphing technologies has been developed for the design of aircraft. The tool is able to face problems as fluid-structure interactions, ice growth and shape optimization. The platform was implemented on HPC also in the context of the FORTISSIMO European project. RIBES was focused on the increase of the accuracy of aeroelastic analysis methods based on coupling fluid dynamics and structural solvers. Furthermore, a significant part of the budget was dedicated to the realization of an experimental campaign of aeroelastic measurements in a wind tunnel on a realistic wing structure. The results of these two projects constituted the background for the event and gave the inspirations for the themes of the several presentations. The workshop was also followed remotely thanks to the university’s IT support.

The success of the event suggested to collect the contributions of the participants and to propose to Springer International Publishing the publication of a book based on the three topics of the seminar. The call for paper, which was not limited to the workshop participants, led to select ten quality papers that were subjected to a peer review process in which professors and researchers active in the field of European research were involved. The book, entitled Flexible Engineering Toward Green Aircraft: CAE Tools for Sustainable Mobility, was published last March in the series Lecture Notes in Applied and Computational Mechanics and was edited by the organizers of the workshop Marco Evangelos Biancolini and Ubaldo Cella. The book is opened by Paolo Colombo, ANSYS Inc.’s Global Industry Director of Aerospace and Defense, who provides a vision of the unexpressed potential of numerical modelling and a picture of the future scenario on software technologies in the field of aeronautical design.

Call for contribution Workshop

Flexible Engineering – Call for contributions

Dear colleague,

December 14, 2017 the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” guested the workshop titled “Flexible Engineering Toward Green Aircraft“. The event focused on fluidstructure interaction numerical methodologies, robust optimization and aeroelastic experimental testing. The invited speakers provided the opportunity to highlight the state of the art on technologies related to the design of flexible structures in aerospace engineering with a focus on active researches in Europe. The possibility to follow the presentations online and the support of the EU commission, who gave visibility to the seminar through the channels of the Clean Sky programme media infrastructure, gave an international relevance to the event.

Following the success of the seminar, Springer International Publishing AG agreed to publish a book entitled “Flexible Engineering Toward Green Aircraft: CAE Tools for Sustainable Mobility” reporting a list of selected contributions to the topics the
workshop was focused on. The book will be indexed in all major citation databases (Scopus, WoS, etc). The selection of researches will be not restricted to participants to the workshop but is open to researchers proposing interesting, relevant and original works that are related to these subjects.

Your contribution will be highly appreciated.

These are some important dates for the submission:

  • submission of abstracts by authors (around 200 words): June 29th, 2018.
  • submission of final papers: September 21st, 2018.

Particular attention is addressed to fluid-structure numerical methodologies to face static and dynamic aeroelastic problems. In aerospace engineering, in fact, the flexibility of structures plays a crucial role in several aspects of design processes. The capability to evaluate the interaction between aerodynamic, inertia and elastic forces is important to avoid drag penalties, control system efficiency loss and generation of potentially dangerous phenomena as divergence, control reversal and flutter. A significant part of the agenda is dedicated to the progress of “high fidelity” CFD-CSM coupling and to the description of the recent experimental activities performed to support the validation of numerical Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis methodologies.

The workshop is addressed to students and engineers who want to be updated on the state of the art in aerospace technologies. The participation is free but people interested in attending the event are kindly asked to register or to contact professor Biancolini.
